Not only is Riddu Riddu an arena for experiencing indigenous culture, it is also one of the most important meeting places we have to discuss indigenous issues. Riddu Riddu has pieced together an exciting seminar programme this year and can offer seminars in the topics: climate change, equal rights and discrimination in Sapmi, language politics in Greenland and local resource management in Northern Norway.

At this year's "Nordlysseminar" we hit a panel of debaters with the big question: "Has Norwegian Sami politics gone wrong?". The movie "Fjellfinnhua" by Guro Saniola Bjerk claims that Finnmark is being divided by ethnicity. Based on this claim, we ask: Should the Samis have more and/or other rights than other Northern people? Our debaters are: Guro Saniola Bjerk, filmmaker from Finnmark Helga Pedersen, Deputy leader of the Norwegian Labour Party Bjarne Store Jakobsen, Political Advisor for Sametingsrådet (Sami Parliament Advisory Panel) Anne Julie Semb, Political Scientist at the University of Oslo. Some of the seminars require you to sign up in advance. Visitwww.riddu.no/en and find the seminars you want to attend and sign up!

Riddu Riđđu and the the Norwegian Equality and Anti-Discrimination assosiation wishes during this year's festival to put equality and discrimination in Lapland on the agenda. Speakers from various sami environments have been invited to talk about justice (and injustice) in Lapland from their point of view. It will later on be open for discussion and questions from the audience. A broad panel encouraged to tell stories that illuminate and explore the concepts of what the terms justice and injustice contains. The discussion starts with an introduction by Sunniva Ørstavik from the Equality and Anti-Discrimination assosiation and is lead further on by Associate Professor Britt Kramvig, from the Universitetet in Tromsø. The seminar will be held in norwegian and is also arranged for the hearing impaired.

The movie "Fjellfinnhua" by Guro Saniola Bjerk claimes that Finnmark is being teared into ethnic divisions. The movie was met with bitter criticisms meet and since with deafening silence. Will the Sami elite stay silente until they die over a discussion they dislike?

Sesam Seminar
Time: Friday 23.07.10 at 13-14.30
Place: Nisga´a Longhouse, Riddusletta, Manndalen

This year's two speakers, both with background from the international program Master’s in Indigenous Studies, which annually attract students from around the world.

Focus Greenland - How can one create an effective bilingual education system?

Ivalu Søvndahl Pedersens lecture is about the language policy in Greenland. As in contrast to the other indigenous languages, Greenlandic is not facing extinction. In fact the number of people in Greenland speaking Greenlandic today is increasing. One challenge for the people of Greenland however, is that they have to learn Danish if they wish to undertake secondary education. So how can one create an effective bilingual education system?

Focus Northern Norway - The Oil company Enis' dialogue with the coastal communities and the Sami Parliament

Kristian Aambø is concerned with the indigenous peoples' struggle for local resources in Northern Norway. The Oil company Eni is behind the Goliat project in the Barents Sea. They are in a dialogue with the Sami Parliament and the  coastal communities in the North, however this dialogue is happening in different ways. One of the questions  Aambø is asking is "Should the indigenous people use dialogue as a mechanism to gain control over their own resources?"

The traditional dish Biđos will be served at the seminar.
