Courses at Riddu

Here you can find all the courses you can participate in at the festival. Here you will have an opportunity to get to know the local culture – and the global indigenous culture.

 

Instrument course - fádnukurs

The course runs over two days:

Thursday 22 of July and friday the 23 of July at 11.00-15.00

This is the first time an open course about instruments that has been lost in the sami tradition is being held. Participants will be able to learn how to make and play the fádnu instrument. Fádnu is a sami wind instrument (aerophone) made of the plant “kvann”. The documentation film ”Jakten på urtonen” (The search of the indigenous tone) will be included in the course. The course is free for our public. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth.

 

Joike course

The course runs over two days:

Thursday 22 of July and friday 23 of July from 11.00-15.00.

Berit Alette Mienna from Karasjok is also this year giving a course in how to sing the traditional sami joik. Here you will be able to learn both the technique of the joik and different traditional songs. The course is free for our public. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth. Herb course This course you can either participate on: Thursday 22 of July at 11-16.00, or Friday 23 of July at 11-16.00. During this course you will get to learn about the different herbs that grow around in the north of Norway. This is a course that will take place outdoors so it is recommended to be dressed according to the weather. The course is free for our public. Transportation to Lien herbfarm is included. Festival sami (language course)

This course you can either participate on Thursday or Friday.

The course starts at 12.00 both days and ends at 14.00.

Here you will be able to learn some sami phrases that can be useful during the festival. Phrases from “what you name is” to “where you can find the bathroom”. The course is free for our public. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth. Festival russian (language course) This course you can either participate on Thursday or Friday. The course starts at 14.00 both days and ends at 16.00. Here you will be able to learn some russian phrases, which you can put to use with our many guests and artists from Russia.  The course is free for our public. Tin wire embroidery course

The course runs over two days:

Thursday 22 of July from 11-16.00 and Friday 23 of July from 11-16.00.

Karin Olsen is giving this course in tin wire embroidery, which is a south- and lulesami tradition, used on sami traditional dresses (kofter), handbags and jewelleries. The courses are filled up quickly so sign up today! The participants pay a small fee for the material that will be used during the course. (Remember to bring cash). To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth where you also will be able to pay for the course.

 

Plant dyeing course

The course runs over two days:

Wednesday and Thursday from 10.30-17.30

During this course you will learn how to color yarn with plants from nature. This course will take place at Holmenes farm, sami museum in Birtavarre. The colouring will take place over a fire, as in the old days. Good footwear and clothes are recommended due to the fact that the course takes place outside. You will be able to purchase porridge (made from sour cream) there. The course is being held by Birtavarre handicrafts. The course costs 675 NOK which includes the material and is paid at the start of the course. Transport included. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth. You can participate at this course even if you do not have a ticket for the festival.

 

Vepsian doll course

Thursday 22 of July at 12-15.00

The Vepsian people are known for their fantastic homemade embroidery, pictorial weaving, pottery and dolls. The dolls were clothed with cloth from old clothes, and without painted faces. The people believed that a faceless doll was without life and inaccessible for evil spirits, thereby harmless for children to play with. Participants at this course will be able to learn more about the Vepsian peoples handcrafts. Location for the course: Husfliden (Handicrafts) in Manndalen. Take the Riddu bus to Løkvoll. Vepsian cooking course

Friday 23 July at 11-15.00

During this course you will be able to learn and taste traditional food of the Vespian people. The course is free for the public. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth. Mongolian song technique course The course runs over two days: Thursday 22 of July and friday 23 of July from 12.00-15.00. Urna is one of this years artists at Riddu and will during this course give you the opportunity to learn Mongolian song technique. Urna comes from inner Mongolia where the song traditions are very special, espesially within the song form ”long song”. ”Long song” is where you learn the technique to hold a tone for a long time. The course is free for the public. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth.

 

Riding in the Blackwoods (Svartskogen)

This costs 400 NOK for each ride. Tickets can be purchased at the information booth. Transport included. To participate at this course please meet up at the information booth Fredag 10.30-13.30 eller 14.30-17.30 Cancelled Saturday at 10.30-13.30 or at 14.30-17.30 Also this year you will be able to enjoy a wonderful ride to the Blackwoods (Svartskogen) in Manndalen on a heather horse (lyngshest). During the ride you will get a insight as to how the horse was used in the old days, and about the strong roots the heather horse has in Manndalen. You will also learn about the history of the Blackwoods, and how it has been to use during the years. The Blackwood rides has been very popular the last few years during the festival. Children under the age of 15 must have a parent with them during the ride. If you are under 15, please write you age in the information section.

 

Film course for youth From wednesday 21 of July – Sunday 25 of July.

The course is for youth at the age of 13-19.

Internasjonal Sami Filmsenter invites youths to a film course at Riddu Riđđu. From screenplay for film – it is a practical workshop where you can learn how to make a film. You will be in groups of five and under the guidance of filmteacher Stein Bjørn. During the course you will write screenplay, record and cut to a short film. The course starts with a review of some basic theory of filmmaking. Limited access: 15 participants.
